NBA Fantasy Draft Diary

NBA fantasy drafts are one of those things that should take an hour, but somehow it takes three, and it is not a fun three hours. From the clowns who intentionally let the clock tick down (if you do this, fuck you), to the clowns who don't even log in to the draft (whats the point?), and everything else in-between, this is one of the worst parts of the fantasy season. The definite worst part is rallying together a group to play. This year we almost didn't have a fantasy season because dudes used the "too busy excuse". Buddy, that excuse is for lame ass high school kids who are too immature to say "no". Set your line ups, check when you can and... well there's nothing else. Anyways, to pass the time until my draft, I decided to do a diary of the draft. This is probably a way worse idea than I think, but time is moving much faster and I can use this space to vent when I get the last pick. This years group is very promising. Lots of shit talk already, some excellent banter, I can't wait to type "nice pick" while I throw my water bottle across the room.

The guy I want first is Giannis, I am not even making that a secret. I want to avoid drafting any Warriors players (other than Green) because those guys legit wont give a shit for a third of their games. Also, I refuse to draft Karl Anthony Towns. The dude responded to the Jimmy Butler saga in the worst way imaginable. At least Wiggins is showing some fight. KAT at this point seems content with his mega contract and call of duty sessions.Other than that, my strategy usually revolves around taking a ton of point-guards. I'm thinking that this year I switch that up. I'm a bit tired of always losing blocks and rebounds.

7:15 (15 minutes to draft)

The draft order is out. After three consecutive years of picking in the top two I get the...sixth pick.

I guess I'm okay with it, if you pick on the ends you usually have to wait a long ass time and can easily get distracted.

Giannis
Jokic
Lebron
Anthony Davis
James Harden
Steph Curry (sigh, gonna be forced to take a Warrior)

The Greatest Fantasy League Ever and NBA Predictions

Two years ago a friend of mine invited me into an NBA fantasy league. On its own that piece of information is not so special. What is special is how this league works. For starters, there is no picking of players, its purely a predictions league. The concept is really simple: rank the East and West conference teams from 1-15 and predict each teams final win-loss record. The scoring system is outrageous. You get a point for correctly picking a team's spot and 5 bonus points if you get their spot and record. Those rules are simple enough, where it gets messy is when your predictions are wrong. For each spot that you miss you lose the difference in points multiplied by 3 (ex. You pick Dallas to be a 9 seed and they finish 15th, you would lose 6 points multiplied by 3 for a total loss of 18). For each game that you miss you lose a point (So say you predicted Dallas would be 41-41 but they finish 21-62, you would lose 41-21=20 points). So yeah, the winner usually has a negative score. ...

Western Conference Standings Prediction

Time for the fun side of the NBA! I really don't understand why the West seems to always be a way tougher conference than the East, but at this point I actively dock accomplishments on the East side. Lebron is awesome for sure but does he really make 8 straight finals appearances playing in the West? Would the Pacers have made the playoffs last year if they had to play the Western conference? (no). Zach Lowe (the godfather of NBA analysis and talk) even said that Eastern conference all-star appearances should be weighrd at like 0.6 times a Western appearance, he wasn't even joking. I expect nothing to change this season so the win totals in the West will be higher overall. I also really wish that the NBA would adopt the 1-16 format for the playoffs.
